Speyer - Technikmuseum

Beitragvon Kuno » 8/5/2010, 16:35

Welcome to the TECHNIK MUSEUM SPEYER, Germany. At our museum we have on display a variety of masterpieces of technology to be found nowhere else. Apart from large collection of aircraft, classic cars, locomotives and fire engines, some of the highlights are an original BURAN space shuttle, the largest space flight exhibition in Europe, a Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet, the U9, a former German Navy submarine and a gigantic Russian Antonov AN-22 cargo plane. In the Museum Wilhelmsbau you can admire a unique collection of automatic musical instruments and much more.

The museum is not a real World War 2 museum, not even a war-museum. Actually, it is fairly difficult to recognice the purpose of the museum at all. The 'main hall' is stuffed with a lot of fascinating vehicles and airplanes - but one definitely misses a concept. It seems as they just collect everything and place it in their facilities, werever there is some room left. The 'main hall' is just overfilled with stuff. This makes it more than difficult to get accurate photographs for the visitor. Strange things as a 1950s -perfectly restored- MB truck carrying a dragster racing car are a common case.

The new 'space hall' presents the giant Russia "Space Shuttle" named Buran. But whilst the hall is called 'space hall', they have already started tu stuff it with a variety of other itmes, as Rallye-motorbikes, WW1 planes, old cars and even a model-railway...

There is a separate small building called 'marine museum' but still one of the mini-U Boats is showed in the 'main hall'. Strangest building of all is the 'model museum' - it seems that for a certain time modellers deliverd theyr built surplus model-kits. The plastic models do not at all represent a good standard of modell building and the house has a large section containing ol radios and typewriters.

The museum is a good reason to spend an afternoon with the family and has a wide range of fascinating technical objects. But the enthusiast will probably be a little bit disapointed, mainly due to the unsatisfactory presentation of the objects.

My recommendation would be that they should urgently do a re-arranging of the objects: Maybe the airplanes and the space-objects in one hall and the vehicles in the other one...

I will place some typical photos below later on. The objects related to WW2 will be placed as separate threads in this forum. I would appreciate other members comments.
