Thru the Cirenaica - Apr 1941

Beitragvon landser162 » 17/8/2007, 21:55

Hello people, greetings to all of you. AFAIk on Apr 04 1941, Rommel in a daring action split his DAK in four columns sending them thru Cirenaica towards Mechili. One of them moved along the coastal road to Derna; the second from Benghazi to the east; the third through Msus and the last from Agedabia thru Bir Tengeder to Mechili. Could someone here kindly help me with the OoB of those columns?. A little account of that action would be useful too. Thanks in advance. Regards. Landser. 8)

Doesn't Jentz give a breakdown of the Kampfgruppen?

(Still haven't got my copy back yet).
Cheers: Dave.

Don't know exactly whether there were really four KGs, then even after reading so many accounts, not few designations are confusing. Besides, some units got struck in the sand while underway, others were re-ordered to go other place etc. So, a rough composition was as follows:

- AA.3 + leKp I./PR.5: towards Benghasi, then split, with a Kp moving via Jebel Heights to Mechili, while others went for Derna; Brescia to follow;

- KG Schwerin: MG.8, I/PR.5 (- Kp w. AA.3), Kp/PzJägAbt.39, PiKp, two 105.cm leFH (I/AR.75) and I/Flak.33 to M. el-Grara then Mechilli (one of I/Flak.33's 88s+SdKfz.8 was actually the first German vehicle to reach Mechili, already on the morning of 7 April);

- KG Olbrich: II/PR.5, MG.2, I/AR.75 and Kp PzJäg, VII batt. carri M: from Zuetina, through Antelat to Msus; then Mechilli and Derna;

- MG.2 then separated for "Unternehmen Ponath", driving through Solluch, Msus and Mechili, before advancing on Derna;

- KG Streich: originally part of KG Schwerin, including Stabs-Kp. PR.5 (?), with elements from scattered units it picked up on advance. They reached Mechili as second (following the lonesome 88 ).

Finally, on 6 April the whole Ariete was sent on a march from Agedabia to Ghemines, Solluch and Sceledima. Their XII and III batt. bersagl. (KG Fabris?) reached the Derna area on 10th, when the rest of division was reaching Tangeder. The following day all were ordered to el-Adem.

Great pictures. Wouldn't the SPAA be from FlaBtl 606?
