The LW HQ in Derna was probably the first building occupied by Germans in Afrika, it became the HQ of FliegerFuhrer Afrika, they arrived a few days before Rommel.

Now I am confused. Since you say that a Building in DERNA was probably the first one occupied by the Germans; occupied a vew days before Rommel's arrival. I thought that when the first Germans arrived in Libya the frontline was somewhere around EL AGHEILA - which is hundreds of Kms further WEST. But to be honest; I am not that familiar with the dates. However; it would mean that the Germans were already in Libya before the British had reached DERNA during their first advance; is this correct?

It was not literally the 1st one, it is just a manner of speaking. O`Connor advanced past Beda Fomm etc etc, then he had to withdraw to allow troops to be sent to Crete/Greece.

Years later in an interview O`Connor said that he should have ignored his orders and carried on to Tripoli, which would have ended the war in Afrika before the DAK arrived. Instead he followed orders and ended up being captured miles behind his own lines.

and carried on to Tripoli

Agree with him. Without being sarcastic - I assume this would have worked. Despite his tanks were worn out and the supply lines overstretched. The Italians were fully demoraliised those days and I do not expect them to have had the power & energy to build up a last defensive line to protect TRIPOLIS. Even Rommel was surprised in what disorder he found the Italian troops standing close to SIRTE when he arrived.

FIG TREE HOSPITAL

Sad news about the subject: The have erected a massive brickwall around the figtree. Could be to protect the place; ok. But it really disturbes --- I am very happy to have seen the place in its "original" condition. Sorry but I did not even want to make a foto of it as it looks now.

LADY BE GOOD

Just another sad news. After LBG was dumped for about 10 years in a yard, it has been transfered now to another yard and dumped there even worse.

It has been at the Tourisim Office for over a year, unless they have moved it in the last 6 weeks.

MF; all the times I have been in TOBRUK, LBG was in a yard just next to the place where the guns are located. Now they made a new wall around the guns and transfered (dumped!) LBG there as well. You know the place (where Rommels HQ is in the cellar :-) )

@ daschewy; are there any indications that above city-map is showing Tobruk? I would assume, that it CANNOT be Tobruk especially since one road is named after Tobruk.

What is the source of that city map?
