hello to all :); here goes a little story on that...............

Sinking of the MV Oceania and Neptunia - Sep 1941.

Aerial reconnaissance reported that in Taranto, there were in readiness, the transatlantic Neptunia, Oceania and Vulcania. The British appreciated that its movement would be kept away from the threat of torpedo planes based in Malta and, therefore, would sail farther east, to arrive in African waters 100 miles due east of Tripoli. They set an ambush with four submarines. The Unbeaten deployed in the likely arrival point above mentioned, while the submersible Upright and Upholder waited for to the W and the Ursula at the entrance of the mine cleared channel, about 30 miles east of Tripoli.

The liners with the escort of destroyers Da Recco, Da Noli, Gioberti, Isodimare and Pessagno sailed on 16 September. At 0330 on 17 the Unbeaten reported the presence of the convoy too far from its position to attack. The Upholder moved in the surface to intercept. In these circumstances the gyro stopped working and should appeal to a small magnetic compass. At 5,000 yards it fired four torpedoes and dived.

One hit the Oceania affecting its propellers and consequently the ship stopped. Two other reached the Neptunia which was condemned. The Vulcania proceeded at full speed towards Tripoli. Later on in daylight while the Italian destroyers were busy in the rescue of the passengers of Neptunia and the destroyer Pessagno was towing the Oceania, she was hit by two torpedoes from the Upholder sinking in eight minutes. The human losses were relatively small, 384 men in connection with all carried in 5818, much more sensitive was the sinking of two ships very valuable and irreplaceable.
